Name Changes

Name Changes

The Texas family courts handle name changes for children and adults.  This is a formal legal process that involves certain steps to be taken before a court will grant a name change.  The steps include obtaining a background check through the FBI, providing appropriate notices, and court appearances.  When filing for a change of name for a child, both parents must consent to the name change.

After a divorce, a woman may want to revert back to using her maiden name.  Texas allows for the option to change a woman’s name within and as part of a pending divorce proceeding.  This request must be specifically requested in the pleadings.  If not requested, and one decides to change her name after the divorce is finalized, a formal name change proceeding will need to be filed with the Court.

Our office can guide you through the name change process when needed.
